Welcome from CEO and Leader

Thank you for taking the time to find out more about joining us at Tamworth Borough Council. We are on an exciting journey to realise our ambitions around growth and regeneration with a clear plan and newly formed leadership team. Both of these roles are pivotal to the Council becoming self-sustaining by 2021.

Tamworth is a densely populated, small authority, with over 75,000 residents in approximately 12 square miles and we are focused on driving growth, skills and employment in the Borough. We are active members of two LEP’s and are non-constituent members of the West Midlands Combined Authority and are keen to work with partners to leverage in as much opportunity and investment to Tamworth we can.

We are proud of our rich heritage in Tamworth and it is a great place to live, work and spend time and we want become even more of a place to go to for all those. About Tamworth

Tamworth is a large market town right in the centre of Britain – close enough to Birmingham to share the benefits of working with England’s second city, but far enough away to have our own distinct identity.

The borough of Tamworth has a population of 77,000 and you can find out more from the 2011 census. Here at Tamworth Borough Council, we are responsible for providing a wide range of services for those residents, as well as for the many businesses based here and the people who visit the borough. Our Council is currently made up of: 21 Conservative councillors, 6 Labour councillors, 1 UK Independence Party member (UKIP) councillor and 2 Independent councillors.

We provide a wide range of services for our residents, but our aim is not just to provide services – we wish to grow our own local economy to ensure we can achieve our new vision “To put Tamworth, its people and the local economy at the heart of everything we do”.

About the Roles

Assistant Director – Growth & Regeneration – up to £63,000

This is a large and important portfolio to us, including environmental health, planning, regulation, growth and regeneration and the postholder will report directly to our Chief Executive. We are specifically looking for a specialist in regeneration and growth, with an awareness of regulatory services. To be successful in this role, you will need to have strong leadership ability and management capability. We rely heavily on forging strong partnerships to deliver and draw in investment and you will need to be skilled and experienced at shaping and developing these, with clear examples of where you have collaborated successfully to drive growth.

As a senior leader in the Council you will need to build strong relationships with members, seeking to work with them and being comfortable at having honest conversations – at Tamworth we value straight talking and openness.

This portfolio was previously led by our current Chief Executive and offers an excellent spring-board in your career – we are clear this role and the successful postholder are pivotal to our success and realising our ambition.

Head of Audit and Governance – up to £49,000 + £5,000 shared service allowance

This role is responsible for transforming how Tamworth Borough Council uses governance to help us move forward. We are looking for a proactive and positive person to relish the opportunities in this role to lead the governance and audit processes for both ourselves and neighbouring Lichfield Council.

In this role you will also be the Monitoring Officer for the Council and we are prepared to develop and invest in you to fulfil this role, as we recognise the successful candidate may not have done this before. We want you to take a common sense approach to ensuring our standards and behaviours are upheld and you will be able to quickly and confidently get to the bottom of any issues to seek a resolution.

To be successful in this role you will need to be strong analytically, thorough, with a great eye for detail and an ability to cut through issues, swiftly to address them. You will need to be an excellent communicator who can succinctly summarise complex information and enthuse people about governance.
